INDEPENDENT STUDY / ADVANCED COURSEWORK
INDEPENDENT COURSEWORK is helpful for students who would like to continue to take a repeatable course but cannot fit the course into their schedule. For example, a student who wishes to continue to write for Winnachronicle but is unable to take the course at its scheduled time. This student could continue to write articles or take photos to be published in Winnachronicle.
ADVANCED STUDY is an experience for students who complete a course or series of courses and would like to continue to advance their learning in that subject area when there isn’t a scheduled course available. For example, a student who would like to continue beyond Jewelry II or Latin IV.

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING
PROJECT-BASED LEARNING, or PBL, is a learning experience where the student gains deeper knowledge and broader skills by investigating a topic of their choice. Students actively explore real-world problems and respond to complex questions and challenges. This will often require the student to draw upon previous coursework and apply it in a very practical way to their project. PBL’s will usually require a community partner or a Mentor Teacher.
- What is/are your essential question(s) for this ELO? This should be your main motivator, and should drive your learning experience. Essential questions should be thoughtful, provoking, and philosophical – and they should never have a simple answer that can be easily looked up online or answered from another source. CLICK THIS LINK to learn more about coming up with an essential question.
- Do you have a Community Partner, Mentor Teacher, or other collaborators in mind? If so, who? If not, what skills or expertise would an ideal Mentor have? In this section, list any industry professionals, teachers at Winnacunnet, or others who have in mind to help support you through this ELO.
- What might be your final product for your ELO? In other words, what substantial piece of evidence will you create by the end of this experience to demonstrate your learning? CLICK THIS LINK to learn more about how to come up with a final product.
- Now, create an outline of how you might accomplish this ELO by writing a week-by-week structure. A helpful hint is to “plan with the end in mind”, which means putting your goal/final product in Week 12, and then working backwards from there. You should plan for your ELO to be 12 weeks long, which is the length of the trimester. If you think your ELO will take longer than one trimester, include that in your plan.
